Homework: May 15 History is full of shocking surprises

So far, it is amazing that:
  • Very few historians attribute the "dark ages" to the Muslim destruction and constant attacks from the 600's through 900.
  • Few mention how rich and varied civilized, Romanized life was in Visigothic Spain during the 500's and 600's.
  • Few discuss the mafia-like arrangement between Viking slave raids and Muslim slave markets in Spain and Baghdad during the 700's and 800's.
  • More than half the female population of Iceland is Celtic--from Irish, Welsh, and Scottish slaves
  • Few explain that Muslims attacked and enslaved tens of thousands of people from coastal towns in Britain well into the 1800's.
And now, we will learn a few amazing facts about the heroic King Richard the Lionhearted, his weak brother and successor, King John, and a surprise King of England about whom we have never heard!

What is one surprising fact about each of

  • King Richard
  • King John
  • King Louis

King Richard – He fought in the Third Crusade and then was captured and imprisoned because he went home disguised as a kitchen maid. He got killed because he forgot to put on armour.
King John-Known as John Lackland, he lost England the most land. He was forced to sign the Magna Carta. He was Richard’s brother and successor. John was excommunicated along with anyone who spoke to him. He offered to turn England into an Islamic county for protection.
King Louis- Was the son of the King of France and was welcomed with open arms to become the King of England. He ended up controlling most of England. I think that it is very interesting that hardly anyone has heard about King Louis.

He was a fearless warrior, and grow up learning chivalry, he was handsome and dashing. He came to London for his coronation. He was a story book hero. He had no heir; his brother was then king.

King John

Little brother of Richard. He was driven out of France. John tried to carry on reigning in England. But anyone who spoke to him would be excommunicated by order of the Pope.

King Richard: Thought he was the hero in his own imaginary story.

King John: Learned how to backstab because of his family's history.

King Louis: Barely talked about, but controlled most of England; was the Prince of France.

King Richard: Also known as the 'lionhearted', King Richard traveled to fight the third crusade and was captured on the way back to England.
King John: Also known as John Lackland, King John was never meant to be king and for a good reason. He was not well liked, and was forced into signing the Magna Carta in 1215.
King Louis: Not a well known king who, even though he was of French descent, ruled England.
